Alice Yim New York SS13

Alice Yim Raina DressWithout a doubt, a collection I look forward to previewing is that of the supremely talented Alice Yim New York.  She produces instantly wearable, modern and minimalist pieces, all highly feminine and very sophisticated.  One of my favourite little black dresses ever, the Raina Dress (above, photo by Lydia Hudgens) is a design from Alice.  Rather than being ‘on trend’ for any particular time of year or a mere fashion fad, Yim’s styles will easily transition from season to season.  Her collection for spring summer 2013 is a dreamy assortment of beautifully fitted and draped skirts and dresses, chic tailored shorts and pants, vest tops and rompers. My favourite piece is the Posy Skirt in Onyx - a wonderfully full lace design with leather waistband.

You may, Blog Reader, be drawn to the lemon chiffon and canary yellow Amaryllis Dress.  It has a lovely criss-cross back detail and handkerchief design – perfect for summer.

I can’t stress enough how much I want you to go to Alice’s website right away and explore her collection further.  You can now SHOP Yim’s collection online – click HERE to browse.

It’s been a while since I wrote a little update on my life, Blog Reader! I’ve been so hectic at work lately I’ve had less time to write these past few months. On the other hand I’m busy planning lots of exciting travel and other adventures to share with you over the summer.  Drop me a note below if there is anything you’re interested in seeing on the StyleOnTheCouch over the next few months – designer features, outfit posts etc. Coming up I have the new line from Al & Alicia to share with you, another of my ‘Little Black Dress’ with a twist series and a few accessories I’ve been investing in lately.  As always, thank you for stopping by to read.  Come visit soon! Drop me a note on Twitter or Instagram if you’d like to say a more personal ‘hello.’

In Training: Ash Footwear – Andy Wedge Trainer Hi-Top

At one stage in my life I lived in trainers*.  What with Psychology study, placements in different hospitals and centres around London and part time work I was always rushing here there and everywhere and trainers got the comfortable vote.

Sneakers with wedges (hidden in the sole, to extend the leg as if wearing high heels) have been around for a while now and recently I had the opportunity to try out a new style from ASH Footwear – the Andy wedge hi-top trainer in black, stone and cobalt.

I am completely and utterly besotted with this new style.  First of all, they are super comfortable.  Secondly, they are very flattering – with regular trainers you lose those glorious leg extending inches you get with a high heel; here you have comfort and style all in one.

Another thing I love about the sneakers is that they give me the opportunity to be more casual with my clothing.  Perfect for this time of year, when warmth can often trump ‘fashion’, (an ongoing battle I have come the colder weather).  Not so anymore…!  The trainers are a great partner for slim fit jeans – here I’m wearing them with my favourite skinnies, Zara coat and my new boyfriend tee from Zoe Karssen.

Other ways I can’t wait to style these trainers are with leather-look trousers, a plain white tee and my Helmut Lang jacket and also with more denim and a classic black blazer.

These are now my go to run-about-town shoes.  Any wedge sneakers in your closet, Blog Reader? How do you style them?

You can view the entire ASH wedge trainer collection here as well as buy online.

*much to the amusement of my fellow psychology trainees who read this blog. Yes, this one is for you, guys.

The Party Planner: BCBG Max Azria

At this time of year, Blog Reader, I start to get excited about the party season.  Yep, with my birthday in November* then Christmas it’s time to think (hmm, dream?) of dresses for cocktails with the girls, longer gowns for dinners out and the right styles to comfortably dance the night away in.

I bought this BCBG Max Azria dress in New York City during one of their super sales.  I think BCBG is a great brand to turn to for cocktail dresses and evening gowns; I like the search functions of the website (type, length, colour) and the price bands are often reasonable for special occasion wear.

Some of my favourites from the current collection, clockwise from left: Claudine Straples Evening Gown; Raya Pleated Lace Cocktail Dress; Nagdalina Side Peat Printed Dress;  Carine Asymmetric Draped Evening Gown; Mercedes Cocktail Dress.

Purple is an unusual colour choice for me.  Symbolic of royalty and opulence (the shade here is a royal purple hue) this dress is a grand choice for a night out – I’ve mentioned before I am a sucker for splits but the cut-out back detail is also interesting and unusual.

I’m even accessorizing here, Blog Reader! A little sparkle over the holiday season feels essential.

I’m busy putting together some other dress / gown suggestions for the party season so if you’ve seen any killer styles leave me a comment below, as I might include it in the feature. Have a great weekend!
