There are collections and designers that one dreams of wearing. Those put under the label ‘most coveted’ or ‘to die for’ – the ones you look at over and over in Vogue, the ones you assign to your dream closet when you win the lottery or actually get to the checkout page of the Net-a-Porter sale…

Rick Owens is one of those designers whose aesthetic I admire and whose styles I have recently coveted.  Completely in line with where my own aesthetic appears to be moving, Owens sticks to monochrome shades and has his feet firmly planted in the dark side.  However, it can be quite difficult to see wearable designs in Owens’ catwalk shows, and as Vogue notes, his collections often seem ‘sinister and otherworldly’.

Not so for fall winter 2013/4 where Owens offered a wonderful range of leather and layers; shearling collared dresses, kimono style robes and a stitch motif, inspired by Japanese basket weaving:

“Owens went one part street and urban on us to one part very beautiful, combining his signature mix of leathers and layers for cape-backed dresses and slit long coats, duffle styles or those that were woven together with thick cables and knots. The same detail wrapped itself around ankles on wader boots that came with a killer, killer stiletto.” – Vogue

On my birthday I received a lovely gift of the Athena dress from the FW13/14 collection from my amazing husband.  It has made me think again about the quality of pieces I invest in and how I want to refine and build a wardrobe around my most coveted designers after all.  2014 might start out as the year I finally dress in the aesthetic I want to be seen in Blog Reader. Statement (Jimmy) Choos, Statement Shoes: Hot Heels

statement shoesThe allure of my hot pink Jimmy Choo Anouk heels never seems to fade.  I’ve always been lagging behind most girls I know when it comes to shoe collections* but I am trying, Blog Reader, to slowly catch up. It’s also amazing how packing for a three-week trip makes you start prioritising in the fashion department.

A pair of statement heels, I am learning, goes a long way.  I could live a life in monochrome but accessories and shoes then become key.  A capsule collection of some simple dresses with statement shoes is my new best friend for this upcoming trip.  So in this post I was feeling inspired to share my six favourite ‘statement heels’ of the moment. If you have time, be sure to check out Shoes Of Prey  where you can play with a variety of shoe types and fabrics to design your own heels and feel a little Carrie Bradshaw in the process.

Lots of posts to come over the next week, Blog Reader!! Then I’ll be taking a little blog break as I head back to the States for a few weeks. You can still follow my adventures on Twitter, Tumblr and Instagram.

*Seriously.  My mantra used to be ‘I don’t do expensive for anything that hits the ground regularly.’ Then I realised people with expensive bags just gave them an extra seat at the dinner table.

Beauty Lies in Strength: CrossFit / Sure Challenge

Crossfit challenge

In just one month, Blog Reader, I head over to the States to get married*.  Inspired by uber-fit American-fiance I’ve taken on a bit of a fitness challenge before the day, over at the CrossFit Norwich gym.  Here I take on a series of WODs (Workout-Of-The-Day) resulting in an intense fitness session involving squats and lifts with gymnastic movements.  It’s a huge challenge for someone my shape and size but one that reminds me that beauty lies in strength which is a great feeling.

But. It’s summer. It’s hot. And I’m one sweaty mess when it comes to intense physical activity, the level of which I haven’t experienced since I hung up my pointe shoes many years ago.  To accompany my new (and far more serious) fitness regime I needed a new deodorant to protect me from the moment I applied it all the way through the CrossFit workouts.  Sure sent me one of their new Maximum Protection range to test out (four scents are available, I will be taking Clean Scent through its paces) – designed to provide 48hr protection against perspiration. You read that right, 48 hrs – meaning I can apply the unique cream format at night time and allow the product to adjust and adapt to my body whilst resting.  Because my body temperature is consistent at night when I am sleeping, Sure’s new TRIsolidTM technology can acclimatise to my skin and form a protective network across my sweat glands for a deep layer of protection.  Well hey, perfect for psychologist-me running around the hospital during the day to all my different sessions and perfect for gym-bunny me with my CrossFit challenge two to three times a week in the evenings.  Sure claim that their new range is 2x stronger than other deodorants, so check back next week to read more about my workouts and see how Clean Scent performed.

*Eeeeee!! :)
