The Psychology of the Colour White

The last day of my pre-Christmas break in Mexico (I’m not so smiley in these photos, it was time to leave!) saw a welcome return to the purity of white.  I bought these J.Crew toothpick jeans in one of the sales over in the States and I think they will be a wardrobe staple this summer when black and white along with pastel and ‘fondant’ shades will be seen all over the high street.  I read somewhere that white affects us psychologically by aiding mental clarity, encouraging us to de-clutter our lives and evoking new beginnings. I don’t know whether it was the colour or this beach, but so far 2014 has been great for re-directing my focus on to the things I really want to achieve this year.

It remains to be seen whether these jeans will last on the London underground :/ but watch this space!

Wearing: J.Crew Toothpick Jeans; Zara Shirt.

Classic Clothing Series: The White Shirt

The white shirt is one of those ‘wardrobe essentials’ I find very difficult to get right.  Not only do I find it difficult to find the perfect classic white shirt, I find it hard to obtain a white shirt with a twist, something a little different but still in the essentials vein.

These photos were taken in Austin, Texas just before I left America.  I love this oversized shirt shape, how the sleeves fall long and the feeling of being cocooned.  I don’t think there is anything sexier than a simple style like this – a white shirt being a wardrobe staple for work wear or worn with jeans on lazy weekends.

So here we are. A shortlist of my current favourite white (cream and off white) shirts for this post:

With a twist:

Reiss Astra Volume Sleeve Shirt

Diesel Cropped Back Shirt from ASOS.

Classics:

J Crew Blythe Blouse

Whistles Iris Blouse

And one for the boys:

I found this shirt in white in McQueen in NYC and loved it.  Although expensive (!) it’s a stunning shirt for the boys: Harness Shirt (yes, yes I know but isn’t it great)!

I’m wearing: white shirt from Marks & Spencer.  Jeans, Legging Jean from GAP.  Skull clutch from my friend Nicole Rosano – see her Etsy shop here.

With thanks to Steve Wampler Photography and Alex Suarez for the images.

You’ve Got The Power To Know: You’re Indestructible.

The search for the perfect white shirt is never an easy one.  I found this gorgeous Klara buttondown at Anthropologie at the start of the year and I haven’t stopped wearing it since.  Made from oh-so-sheer silk it has a fabulous feel and a wonderful flow along the asymmetric hem.  Recently I’ve been styling it with the front tied together but I’m usually wearing it loose and untucked, as I did for London Fashion Weekend, here.

I can tell I am reacting to the floral explosion this spring since I’m craving monochrome lately.  But my recent monochrome comes dressed with metal (you’ll surely see this theme develop on the blog over the next few months).  Case in point – I’m utterly obsessed with these Wing High Sandals from the Unique collection at Topshop.

One of my purchases from February’s trip to London, I agonised over the practicality of these shoes in store (the thought process: “so, these are sandals but really they seem like a boot.  They seem like a boot but they are a boot with a peep toe. Hmm.  And cutouts. But really they are sandals and I do like them.  Hmm. I don’t need them, but hey everyone can live without fashion.  I like them. A LOT.“)

The point, Blog Reader, is not actually one related to practicality.  The point, Blog Reader, is that I feel like Wonder Woman. And that’s reason enough for me.

With their gold metallic heels and winged detail they are a truly unique design.  Available in black leather/gold or off white/gold I’m off to a flying start (Could. Not. Resist) wearing a motif which was a huge for fall 2012. I’d say this was a small stepping stone (again, could not resist) along the way to me being head to toe in gold come the Christmas parties – anyone want to buy me this gorgeous Ralph Lauren gown?

How are you wearing your metallics Blog Reader?  (Alternatively – do you own any superhero-themed-clothing? Do share!)
