Friday Lingerie Lust: At Pirate Sea – Made By Noemi

Inspired by a picture of a 19th century chinese pirate called Ching Shih (also known as Zheng Yi Sao,) Made by Noemi‘s lingerie collection ‘At Pirate Sea‘ attempts to get behind the surface of this strong-minded and disciplined beauty.

“Ching Shih was originally a prostitute who married a Cantonese pirate captain. When he died she took over his role, married his son and made him captain.  She was however the one to lead 1800 ships and more than 80,000 pirates were under her command.  She was fearless and disciplined her men with strict rules and castrated any man who would commit rape.  Ching Shih was in no way a nice lady but her strong mind and life inspired me to create a collection that would appeal her.

For the collection I wanted to avoid the classical pirate wine-red-corsett-with-puffy-white-shirt feeling and instead go deeper into the dirty rotten sea colours.  I don’t imagine the life on board as glamorous but rather tough and humid.  The colour palette for the collection spins around earthy shades like olive-green and petroleum blue with off white and beige.  The materials mix between heavier velvet and delicate mesh and lace.”

“Femininity and luxury meets a world of struggle and unfriendly approaches. I wanted to make a clash of two imaginary worlds that never meet in the pirate fairytale and see what happened” ~ Noemi Ivanova, designer

Within this collection it is the mix of textures that interest me.  The feel of fabric against the skin is an important part of lingerie in my opinion, and I like the use of velvets, mesh and lace together.  My favourite from the collection is (image above) Deep Sea - soft cup bras are perfect for my shape and I like the gold fixture centre middle.

Having resisted the temptation to write pirate jokes throughout this lingerie lust, I have to say it – oo-arrrrh indeed, me hearties! *winks*

Happy weekend!

Friday Lingerie Lust: Maison Close

I first read about lingerie brand Maison Close on some of my favourite blogs before I stumbled across their designs in that little gem of a lingerie boutique ‘Azaleas‘ in the East Village, NYC.  I’ve featured them before as a Friday Lingerie post and with four new collections ready to tantalize and seduce, it’s time to feature them again.

If you are looking for lingerie that is well priced, comfortable and enormously sensual, Maison Close is perfect for you.  The brand is committed to the game of love: erotic, chic and refined.  From their lookbook:

Maison Close shows pride in its commitment to a peculiarly French style of love games in which gallantry and naughty pleasures form a perfect blend. The brand plays with the notions of control and submission, secrecy and revelation, retention and ecstasy, with each successive collection avoiding the pitfall of vulgarity and showy exhibitionism.”

New collections include Villa Satine in black (second image) available now and Exquise Allure, (image top) available to purchase from January on the Maison Close website.  I very much like how the simplicity of the set in the very first image translates into such an alluring (naturally, given the name) design – having previously brought out Pavillon Bellevue in ivory, I was pleased to see the label include these styles in particular in the new collection.  A bodysuit and long sleeved dress complete the series.

I own several Maison Close designs and some of their accessories too, which I feel make perfect gifts – they are presented in elegant purple boxes almost the colour of Milk Tray**.  Affordable and attractive, how can you resist?

You can purchase Maison Close direct from their website. Also from Faire Frou Frou, Shop Des Createurs, Coco De Mer and Journelle.

*Oo la laaaa indeed.

Friday Lingerie Lust: Valentine’s Day Part I

I feel there are different camps one can fall into with regards to Valentine’s Day. The first I call the “believers”, those who go all out with flowers, cards, chocolates and poems. The second are the woeful accepters, the Bridget Jones types who cry into the bottom of their empty wine glass and mourn the ghosts of lovers past.  Others are in denial: ‘Valentine’s Day? Oh I hadn’t noticed…..’  Which one are you?

Valentine’s Day, whether single or in a relationship, is the perfect excuse to show a little self love.  Treating oneself to a fabulous new set of lingerie or piece of loungewear on this day should be mandatory.  If you haven’t yet got the message from my lingerie columns that feeling good, outside and in, is intrinsically linked – the interplay between each affecting one another – please re-read my earlier columns.  Ladies in particular, I hope you use Valentine’s Day as the perfect time to invest in that special something that celebrates all your best womanly bits, no matter if others see or if you are the only person to know what lies underneath.

This week is part one of my two-part Valentine’s Day series.  I’ve chosen some of my favourite lingerie items guaranteed to make you feel fabulous – some are designed specially for this time of the year, others are part of current collections.  I hope you take a little inspiration from this series for yourself, a loved one, or even to treat a friend.

Image top: Myla:  Myla brought out a fabulous Valentine’s Day campaign this year featuring runway model Le Call wearing their devastating sexy red and black boudoir pieces.  I own a few sets from Myla and I think the label is incredibly well made.  Recent designs are playful and practical.  Definitely a label to find some inspiration from this time of year.

Image middle top: Huit: The heart shaped design of this ‘cupcake collection’ from Huit make it a perfect choice as a gift.  Available in a range of bold colours (red, purple) at a great price.

Image middle bottom: the Lascivious Simone set in raspberry.  A special Valentine’s Day design, there is some fantastic accentuation of curves in this collection. The brief with its side ‘fins’ is particularly flattering.

Image, bottom: a delightful piece from the Arabesque range from Between the Sheets.  I love this new luxe collection – and if you’re a fan like me make sure you head to the Between the Sheets sample sale at VMV Hypoallergenics in Union Square on Friday 3rd Feb, noon – 8pm, to pick up some Valentine’s bargains.  (I’m going – see you there!)

Tune in for part two next Friday…. Have a great weekend!
