I admit to getting a little excited about Valentine’s Day.  Whether you are single or in a relationship, it can be a nice excuse* for showing care and sharing, whether it is with lovers or friends or even a little self-pampering.  With this in mind, to continue my hair series I asked one of my favourite salons in London for some advice on how to make hair look stylish, sexy and glamorous on Valentine’s Day.  Paul Cynberg, Creative Stylist and general all round amazing guy who currently works his magic on my hair at Sassoon Salon South Molton Street in London, answered some questions I had about ‘romantic hair’.

On Valentine’s Day, when you’re often wearing sexy clothes and high heels, it occurred to me that I need my hair to complement that ‘perfect’ outfit for that all important night.  Romantic hair is all about “effortless movement and healthy shine”, Paul explained.  He continued, “At Sassoon Salon we’ve put together some looks to help you achieve romantic hair that will not be forgotten”.

What if he is taking you somewhere special?

A chignon is an obvious chic style, but “It is the little touches that make it modern and sexy”, Paul told me. He encourages me to play with the shape and leave the hair soft and teased in places for some simple elegance.  He also warns me not to over-think things when creating the look, i.e. the hair does not need to look perfect, yet should have the feeling of delicate femininity.  “Wisps of hair that escape around the hair lines only add to the simplicity and flirtatious feeling of the look. Use a minimal amount of product – it’s more sensual” Paul advised.  Sassoon Professional Motion Hold hair spray is perfect to secure this loose twist in place all evening.

Are you feeling flirty?

“A teased look is the ultimate in sex appeal” Paul explained.  I am, Blog Reader, blessed with some natural volume in my hair that might work to my advantage for this look.  It seems that instead of blow drying your hair straight, flirty hair is about letting the natural texture shine through and for this, blow drying the hair upside down will create maximum texture.  “Textured hair doesn’t mean having messy hair, it’s all about that lived in feel,” said Paul. A leave-in conditioner, such as Sassoon Professional Hydro Finish will retain some sleekness and prevent hair from becoming frizzy.  Well hello sexy dishevelment, who wouldn’t say yes?

Are you rushing from the office to your date?

“A centre parting is very youthful and can add a playful feel to a ponytail, whereas a side-parting is more grown up and glamorous” Paul told me.  I feel that low-slung and at-the-nape positioning with a slight fall over the ear will keep your look minimal, with a lovely understated elegance. You can also choose to gather hair into a loose, side ponytail, plait and tease pieces of hair for a dishevelled effect.

Finally, my favourite product that is a saviour for beautiful locks: Sassoon Professional Diamond Polish, which nourishes and de-frizzes my hair.  I love this product for taming fly-away tresses and it’s handbag friendly too.  You can be sure it’s going to be a fashion week essential for me next week in London!  I simply add a small amount to wet hair before I blow dry it the night before. You can also add it to dry hair for a dose of magical shine.

I Like To Do The Splits.

This weekend, Blog Reader, I took the opportunity to sort through my wardrobe. Space in Manhattan being limited (and not being blessed with a Carrie Bradshaw walk in closet) I do this every so often to find new combinations and styles within the clothing / accessories I own.  I also made a mental list* of the pieces I would like to take back to Europe with me in a couple of weeks.

I found this striped dress I bought at Urban Outfitters last summer – I wore it a great deal during my road trip around the west coast of America (you can read those travel posts here, here and here) but for some reason it never made it on StyleOnTheCouch back then…. it’s a simple striped style with a flattering scoop neckline and a cute little skirt split** at the front.

The label in the dress is Lazerade by Veda, a brand I’ve been able to find out relatively little about so if you’re familiar with it, please leave me a comment below!  Sunday was a lovely warm day in the city, perfect for a little walk around the East Village to visit some of my favourite shops. I also caught up on my writing, I’ve got some great features coming up this week – two new collections I’m super excited about and a style inspiration feature too.

Hope you had a fabulous weekend! xo

Wearing: Lazerade by Veda Rosemary Dress, Urban Outfitters; Heels, Zara (no longer available but similar here); Scallop Edge Cross Body Satchel (available only in Lilac), ASOS; Fluoro Skinny Belt, also ASOS.

*As opposed to an actual list.  I’m not that organised.

**Yes, Blog Reader, we can indeed call the last photo ‘Sarah’s Leg’.

StyleOnTheCouch Loves: Romance

Easter weekend in Manhattan was a bright and sunny affair – we’re still edging into spring but the temperature on Sunday was quite glorious.  I spent the afternoon in Central Park with a friend and I also caught up on the collections I’m dying to wear this summer.  Petiole is one of these.  I wrote about them back in January - timeless, wearable and romantic garments that make an easy transition from day into night.  For spring 2012 the label have introduced a lovely colour palette of lavender, grass-green, mango and neutrals for their collection of dresses and skirts, shorts and rompers:

My favourite pieces from Petiole are undoubtedly the silk dresses.  They have a wonderful feel on the skin and lovely movement – Petiole use crepe de chine and reverse charmeuse, the latter is often used for lingerie.

Romantic dresses such as these require romantic hair.  I was lucky to work with hair stylist Ashley Maybruck for this shoot, who I met after seeing her styling within the September fashion week presentation for designer Morgan Carper.  Along with styling my hair we talked about hair trends for summer 2012 and Ashley gave me her insider knowledge on curls.  She also provided some tips and hints on how to recreate different looks – her thoughts are below….

Trend #1: Zooey Deschanel Early 60′s look: She is beyond popular right now with her hit TV show New Girl and with her quirky sense of humor and indie retro look this hair style is sure to be popular. I know several people who have gotten bangs because they wanted to achieve this.

How to achieve:
1) let your hair dry naturally and add just a few curls here and there to add texture. Take a 1″ curling iron (the barrel works best at this size) and curl pieces about 1/2 ” – 1″ thick.
3) then use a light spray such as Oribe Superfine Hairspray or for those who are budget conscious try Sebastian Zero Gravity
Note: For fine hair, before step two use a volumizing product such as Oribe Volumista Mist or Big Sexy Hair So Pumped Volumizing Mist
Trend #2: Shoulder Length Beach Curls: Like Ashley Benson with her look at the 2012 People’s Choice Awards, this is also very easy to achieve and is my personal favorite look this season!
 How to achieve:
1) To damp hair add a small amount of mousse such as Tresemme Mousse
2) Blow dry with a brush
3) Take a small section of hair and place the ends at the base of your large curling iron barrel and then wrap the hair up around the barrel until you reach your mid-lengths. Hold the hair for five to 10 seconds and then release the hair by unwinding the strands backwards
4) Style the tips with styling wax such as Eufora Styling Wax or Bumble and Bumble Styling Wax.
5) Sleek down with some shine spray like Redken Shine Spray or with a light hairspray
Trend #3: Long Hair with Romantic Curls: I truly think long hair is going to be the leader next to the Zooey Deschanel look.
 How to achieve:
1) I find it best to let the hair dry naturally to get a slight bounce to the hair
2) With a 1″ curling iron barrel take 1/2″ – 1″ sections of hair and curl backwards (away from the face)
3) Again apply styling wax to the ends, spray down with Shine Spray and finish with a light hairspray.
Some of my other favorite products and tools to use to achieve these looks are:
Babyliss Clipless Tapered Curling IronRusk Shine Spray and TIGI Wax Stick (perfect for fly aways!)
