Reflection: Part One (ASOS Dress & Lascivious Harness)

I am, Blog Reader, taking another little writing break this weekend as I head to Charleston for an adventure.  I’ll be back next week with my usual posting of lingerie and outfit posts but right now a little reflective pause is in order.  I’ll have some news on the blog soon about the future of StyleOnTheCouch and some little changes here and there.  My blog is coming up to three years old… what began as a weekend passion has grown into something that has first and foremost given me amazing connections all over the world but secondly allowed me to develop not just my personal style but different aspects of myself in the process.

I think there are some very interesting parallels that can be drawn between style development and psychological development.  These photos were taken by the amazing team of Amber McConnell and Julian Humphries of Red Rogue Studios in Austin, Texas last month and I absolutely love the outfit I am wearing and how I appear in them. I feel more confident and comfortable in my skin than ever before.  I’ve done a lot of growing up with you and the blog – taken on different professional challenges in psychology and fashion; I’ve moved countries, made new friends and connections, met some truly amazing people and lost some along the way… even with the challenges I hope I am evolving into the sort of woman I want to be.  My style too – quite basic at times, classic perhaps, elegant  maybe – I have fun with what I wear too which I love and I take risks for the first time ever, knowing that I’m going to be ok.

This fashion blogging business – it’s not just about the clothes, Blog Reader.  Let’s see if we can’t get another year of evolution in hey?

See you next week! Travel pics will be on my tumblr as always…..

Chiffon and Leather: Helmut Lang and Mango

Greetings from Manhattan, Blog Reader!  I’m back in New York City after a wonderful vacation in Texas and a lot of fun with friends old and new.  In Austin I had the chance to work with Red Rogue Studio, I met the amazing photographer William Williams (he recently shot a fabulous campaign for Uniform Union by LoyandFord which you can see here) and I caught up with Ashley of Teddies for Bettys, a favourite lingerie boutique of mine.

Back in NYC, I’m leaving behind the denim shorts and cropped tees I wore in Austin and returning to a downtown vibe with black chiffon and leather.

There are a few labels that really set my heart racing.  Some of them I am sure you could guess, Blog Reader: I covet Preen for Thornton and Bregazzi’s sophistication and their wonderfully modern and feminine silhouettes. I adore Rodarte for romance.  With Helmut Lang I crave their cool, urban vibe.  There is a great consistency in the collections of Helmut Lang, something I admire.  In pre-fall this year, the sharp shouldered jackets got my attention and I decided to invest in a leather style (well, part present, part gift to self) that I knew I would wear for years. The jacket works really well with dresses as well as trousers and that was my one requirement for such a piece.  I adore the snug fit and the asymmetric, draped style – a Lang signature.

This 70s style black maxi dress was part of Mango‘s summer collection for 2012, the editorial for which featured Kate Moss, shot by Terry Richardson.  I really liked the summer collection, a mix of sharp tailoring, sports-inspired separates and voluminous dresses.   Going back to this collection today reminded me yet again how simple and chic monochrome can be.  I’m working on the all white look next, with the shot of Kate, below left, as my inspiration:

Watch this space, Blog Reader, watch this space!

Thanks to all who kept up with my adventures in Texas! Normal blogging service resumes.  Tell me, Blog Reader, which pieces have you invested in, that have truly stood up to the test of time?
