Let’s Get Physical: MICHI Fall Collection 2012

I find it difficult to keep fit whilst I am traveling, Blog Reader, so back in England this weekend I turned to the outdoor-gym-of-Lincolnshire. I took a little run around the villages close to where I grew up, dressing in my favourite work out gear, MICHI.  Designer Michelle Watson just released her fall collection for 2012 and as usual I am in love with all of it.

Watson took inspiration from the mysterious underwater world: the unstoppable forces of the deep ocean meeting with serene and natural beauty.  Michelle explained, “Sinuous mesh insertions in contrasting fabrics and textures mirror the undulating oceanic waves and blend with sensual boudoir overtones to flatter the female form and create length.”

I am excited about the new layering pieces in the fall collection.  Long sleeved tops, sweatshirts and tank tops can be worn with the statement bras and leggings both in the gym and on the street.  New colours have also been introduced, including mustard and crimson.

I asked Michelle about her favourites from the new range:

1) The Medusa Leggings in black soft stretch denim because of the sinuous mesh inserts and mixed material mesh. They lengthen, flatter any body shape and are subtly sexy. Great for the gym and even better to dress up for the evening.
2) The Medusa Bra, which has a very clean front with small flattering details such as the center front cut-out triangle. The back is designed to be exposed by layering with a low back or sheer shirt. This bra creates a beautiful silhouette under a sheer or backless top.
3) The Abyss Top is an easy long sleeve layering top made with a buttery, super-soft Italian cotton fabric. The waist, back and shoulder mesh inserts are very flattering and slimming. They give the illusion of a nipped in waist and dress up any work-out outfit.
4) The new french terry sweatsuits (Aurora Sweatshirt, Jacket and Hoodie, and Frontier Sweatpant): MICHI now offers a sweatshirt, sweatpant, hoodie and varsity jacket. They’re perfect to wear to and from the gym, whilst travelling, for lounging and leisure and when you want to feel warm and comfortable but still want to feel polished and put together.
5) The Pipeline Legging is for the customer that wants minimal skin exposed but still wants a chic boudoir look, with an ‘X’ lattice down the side of the leg. A very durable and functional legging for the gym, but very easy to dress up for the evening.

StyleOnTheCouch Loves (all over again!): MICHI Athletic Wear

I discovered the amazing athletic wear from Michi New York earlier this year (you can read the post here) and I’m super excited to show you these photos from the new spring summer collection.  Designer Michelle Watson’s aim to combine her love of high fashion with sport and dance results in the most stylish work out gear I have ever come across.  Last season I invested in two bras and one pair of workout pants for pilates and the gym and I can tell I will soon be putting in a second order.

Even though I can’t quite believe I am posting myself sandwiched in between her gorgeous models, I do want to show you that Michi designs really do work outside of the shiny editorial context – the lioness bra is a favourite piece from her autumn / winter collection that I wear regularly

I’ve also worn her designs layered as everyday wear which is where I think her new collection excels.  We see more statement pieces in the form of tanks and panelled leggings.  For 2012 Michi also brings different colour combinations to core pieces which I love

I also think there is greater attention to detail, for example in her mesh panelling, the cheeky lace up detail and the bold cut outs

Inspiration for the spring summer collection comes from Fritz Lang’s “Metropolis” and the colourful birds of the Amazon.  This is revealed in the structure and colour of the new pieces.  If you’re looking for stylish work out gear that combines fashion and function, you can find Michi at Oak NYC.  Soon Journelle will join the list of stockists.

6th Street Blues

I am more than a little obsessed with Gap since my move to New York City.  I love my feminine dresses, but I return to Gap every time I want denim that perfectly fits my shape, like these super lightweight legging jeans here. I wore this outfit for a night out in 6th Street in Austin last week: dinner at The Iron Cactus and drinks at Maggie Mae’s.

I know you might shy away from the fit of the legging jean, Blog Reader, but before you make up your mind watch this video from Gap that illustrates the thought process behind this new design for Autumn/Winter:

Gap really do have some amazing denim colours in store right now, for Fall.  I have my eye on these shades – green and brilliant blue:

Before you ask, Blog Reader, yes of course I own the legging jeans in black.

Gap have thrown some amazing offers out there recently.  In the US (though slightly affected by hurricane Irene), they offered 50% off denim.  It really was just as well I was forced to stay indoors! Do check out their facebook page (US and international) as I often find offers advertised there first.

Anyone thinking of investing in coloured denim right now?
