When it comes to fitness and working out, Blog Reader, I’m never one to shy away from the hard work required to get my heart pumping and my muscles moving.  Until fairly recently I was a huge fan of Pilates reformer classes, but I haven’t been able to find a studio near my new home just yet so I’m back at the gym trying out some new methods to stay in shape.  I recently discovered TRX; a training system that leverages your body weight along with gravity to help you work out with different levels of resistance. It’s quite  a challenge and this, along with the boyfriend’s help (it’s pretty handy going out with someone who used to be a personal trainer*) I’m probably the fittest I’ve been for a while.

One thing guaranteed to get me exercising regularly is having some great kit to work out in.  I’m a huge fan of MICHI New York for some of the most fashionable work out gear I have ever set my eyes on – here I am (still) wearing designer Michelle Watson’s Illusion Legging with my new Nike ‘windrunner’ and vest from ASOS.  The gym is one of the rare times I do colour, it spurs me on – this jacket is lightweight and perfect for running inside and out this spring.  I confess I am cheating a little here wearing my ASH wedge trainers in this post. I revert to my ASICS for working out but I wanted to show the ASH sneakers because I wear them constantly – if you don’t yet own a pair of ASH check out the full range here.

A little bit of fitness inspiration for you today, to start your week!

I’ve got a little break coming up this weekend, Blog Reader – I’m heading to one of the islands off the coast of England on Wednesday so stay tuned to my Instagram to see pictures.  Hope you all had a fabulous weekend!

*As you might imagine there are pros and cons to this when I’m not motivated lol.

Let’s Get Physical: MICHI Fall Collection 2012

I find it difficult to keep fit whilst I am traveling, Blog Reader, so back in England this weekend I turned to the outdoor-gym-of-Lincolnshire. I took a little run around the villages close to where I grew up, dressing in my favourite work out gear, MICHI.  Designer Michelle Watson just released her fall collection for 2012 and as usual I am in love with all of it.

Watson took inspiration from the mysterious underwater world: the unstoppable forces of the deep ocean meeting with serene and natural beauty.  Michelle explained, “Sinuous mesh insertions in contrasting fabrics and textures mirror the undulating oceanic waves and blend with sensual boudoir overtones to flatter the female form and create length.”

I am excited about the new layering pieces in the fall collection.  Long sleeved tops, sweatshirts and tank tops can be worn with the statement bras and leggings both in the gym and on the street.  New colours have also been introduced, including mustard and crimson.

I asked Michelle about her favourites from the new range:

1) The Medusa Leggings in black soft stretch denim because of the sinuous mesh inserts and mixed material mesh. They lengthen, flatter any body shape and are subtly sexy. Great for the gym and even better to dress up for the evening.
2) The Medusa Bra, which has a very clean front with small flattering details such as the center front cut-out triangle. The back is designed to be exposed by layering with a low back or sheer shirt. This bra creates a beautiful silhouette under a sheer or backless top.
3) The Abyss Top is an easy long sleeve layering top made with a buttery, super-soft Italian cotton fabric. The waist, back and shoulder mesh inserts are very flattering and slimming. They give the illusion of a nipped in waist and dress up any work-out outfit.
4) The new french terry sweatsuits (Aurora Sweatshirt, Jacket and Hoodie, and Frontier Sweatpant): MICHI now offers a sweatshirt, sweatpant, hoodie and varsity jacket. They’re perfect to wear to and from the gym, whilst travelling, for lounging and leisure and when you want to feel warm and comfortable but still want to feel polished and put together.
5) The Pipeline Legging is for the customer that wants minimal skin exposed but still wants a chic boudoir look, with an ‘X’ lattice down the side of the leg. A very durable and functional legging for the gym, but very easy to dress up for the evening.

Time to let me hear your body talk*, Blog Reader.

Somewhere in between trying on the Rag & Bone jeans I’ve been coveting for ages and purchasing a visor from ASOS, I realised I was leaning heavily towards modern sport style clothing.  My Wardrobe defined this trend as “sometimes techy, always functional and   unquestionably chic, it works 24/7 Monday to Sunday“.  Not long after seeing the My Wardrobe feature, which brought together a collection of brands under this theme, I read a nice blog post on Style Positively about sports luxe styling.  I asked Chelsie if she would adapt the post for StyleOnTheCouch; she said yes (thanks Chelsie!) and so here it is…

Sport Luxe won’t see you go unnoticed this spring with contrasting colors, geometric shapes, mesh fabrics and form fitting shapes.  Alexander Wang captured this trend perfectly with his spring ready to wear collection that was inspired by sports such as motorcross and BMX.  His side-striped designs on tops and pants not only gave them a bold, edgier look but they also helped create a leaner silhouette which added a very feminine chicness to the overall style:

What I like about this trend is that it’s somewhat of a challenge in that is different from what you normally see during the springtime. Everyone’s personal style can adapt to the sport trend, whether your look is edgy or sophisticated.  It allows you to keep true to your style but with a more sporty casual chic flair which is perfect for weekend wear. Plus, you won’t have to sacrifice your beloved heels for sneakers! Nicole Miller, Isabel Marant and Alexander Wang paired their sporty looks with a great pair of high heels:So, if you’re going for a (seemingly contradictory) soft and edgy look the garments from the Alexander Wang collection will suit you perfectly. For a more sophisticated style try items like this relaxed Markus Lupfer Sweater from ASOS that has the added detail of contrasting colors in the pleated hem and these ASOS fitted straight leg pants with piping down the side.Even though these items are fantastic for the present spring season they are also perfect to carry into fall.  J Crew and Kelly Wearstler both paired vibrant sweaters with flowy skirts and fitted pants in their fall 2012 ready to wear collections:Runway photos from
