Friday Lingerie Lust: At Pirate Sea – Made By Noemi

Inspired by a picture of a 19th century chinese pirate called Ching Shih (also known as Zheng Yi Sao,) Made by Noemi‘s lingerie collection ‘At Pirate Sea‘ attempts to get behind the surface of this strong-minded and disciplined beauty.

“Ching Shih was originally a prostitute who married a Cantonese pirate captain. When he died she took over his role, married his son and made him captain.  She was however the one to lead 1800 ships and more than 80,000 pirates were under her command.  She was fearless and disciplined her men with strict rules and castrated any man who would commit rape.  Ching Shih was in no way a nice lady but her strong mind and life inspired me to create a collection that would appeal her.

For the collection I wanted to avoid the classical pirate wine-red-corsett-with-puffy-white-shirt feeling and instead go deeper into the dirty rotten sea colours.  I don’t imagine the life on board as glamorous but rather tough and humid.  The colour palette for the collection spins around earthy shades like olive-green and petroleum blue with off white and beige.  The materials mix between heavier velvet and delicate mesh and lace.”

“Femininity and luxury meets a world of struggle and unfriendly approaches. I wanted to make a clash of two imaginary worlds that never meet in the pirate fairytale and see what happened” ~ Noemi Ivanova, designer

Within this collection it is the mix of textures that interest me.  The feel of fabric against the skin is an important part of lingerie in my opinion, and I like the use of velvets, mesh and lace together.  My favourite from the collection is (image above) Deep Sea - soft cup bras are perfect for my shape and I like the gold fixture centre middle.

Having resisted the temptation to write pirate jokes throughout this lingerie lust, I have to say it – oo-arrrrh indeed, me hearties! *winks*

Happy weekend!

Friday Lingerie Lust: Electric Ibiza

Despite my many travels around the big US of A, Blog Reader, I do miss the island of Ibiza, where I would holiday to most summers from the UK.  Ibiza is a perfect mix of all my favourite things; great food and restaurants (like La Masia) fabulously energetic bars (I love Blue Marlin) and beautiful beaches (such as Cala D’hort and Las Salines).

When I stumbled upon Electric Ibiza, a lingerie brand based on the white isle specialising in bodysuits and lavish underwear, I knew I had to post it in a Friday feature.  Founded in 2012 by Emma Sharpe, graduate of the well respected contour training at DeMontford University, UK, these hand crafted designs are unique and that little bit cheeky.

I asked designer Emma Sharpe a few questions about her brand:

Why lingerie?
I have always known I wanted to be in the fashion industry.  I had always excelled at art from a young age and would constantly sit and draw fashion illustrations. I started a fashion course at college where I created my first corset – I think it was at this point I knew it was lingerie and contour garments that were my true passion.
What was the most important thing you learned during your training, that you’ve taken forward into your design business?
Joining the contour course was the best thing I ever did. It is truly an amazing course – I think the most important thing that I learned from my time studying at DeMontfort was to think outside the box.  Lingerie doesn’t necessarily have to mean frilly lace bras and briefs, there is so much more you can create.

I’m a huge fan of Ibiza. How did you end up on the island?
I’ve lived here for 4 years now, I love the place. I came here in my final year of university for the summer before my final major project.  It gave me so much inspiration, my final collection was based on Ibiza – creating bodywear that would take you from the beach to the clubs. I also fell in love that summer and I guess that was the main reason for me moving permanently out here – so I could be with my partner.
What is your favourite piece from your current range, and why?
I absolutely love the Eloisa frill bodysuit – the fit is amazing and the colour palette looks so fantastic with an Ibiza tan! It has been my best seller here – I see people at Blue Marlin in it teamed with sandals and sunglasses and it looks great.

Who do you design for? Who do you have in mind when you create your lingerie?
My lingerie is designed for any woman that loves a little luxury. I always try to create things that are different but that still fit well and are comfortable. I try to create lingerie that you want to show off – wearing garments that reveal a cheeky bow or strap detail.

The Voyeur Harness and Bordelle Autumn Winter 12/13

A slightly different Friday feature for you this week, Blog Reader: both a lingerie feature and an outfit post.  During my last trip home to London I had the opportunity to once again pay a visit to the fantastic creative team at Bordelle.  This Friday feature focusses on their stunning new autumn winter 12/13 collection, inspired by the movies of David Lynch, specifically the surreal ‘Blue Velvet’ with all its dreamy imagery.

Bordelle’s new autumn winter 12/13 is rich in film noir shades (black and neutrals), punctuated with (what else but) velvety purple and deep red.  Some of my favourites from the new line are the Blue Velvet Justine Plunge Bra and Velvet Odile knicker which make a wonderful everyday set with a little opulence.

Above: the Voyeur Angela dress, this season’s take on Bordelle’s signature classic.

Within this new fashion forward lingerie collection are several pieces that can be worn as outerwear.  Their Voyeur Harness is a spectacular body accessory that Bordelle introduced me to during my very first visit to their HQ – I loved the style so much I put in my order there and then.

I’ve been wearing the harness over the simplest dresses and plain tees.  Created from satin elastic panelling, the shoulder pads give this piece great structure.  It is fully adjustable at the front, back and sides – and along the sides run bold, gold plated rings.  You can wear the harness two ways (in the style I am showing here, the front is technically the back of the harness but I prefer the emphasis on the back with the ring design).  The harness is a perfect accompaniment to Bordelle’s floor sweeping Isabella gown, below:

Other favourites from the new collection are the Voyeur suspender, a body contouring piece with two oversized gold rings at the sides and the masterpiece that is the Tutu waspie – a girdle with satin elastic panelling and tulle peplum overlay.  This ability to create truly fashion forward lingerie, to continually innovate and evolve signature designs is one of the reasons I like Bordelle so much.

Provocative, dominant and highly sexy – I said before I feel that Bordelle encourage you to bring out your assertive inner goddess and this new collection is no exception.  You can see the full range on the Bordelle site here.
