I Stole Her Chanel

Reiss_Heels_Reformation_Skirt_Chanel_BagWhen it comes to accessories, I’m a basic-kinda-gal.  Black bag? Check.  Oversized bag? Check. Clutch? Check check. Anything else? Ermmmm….. doesn’t that cover all the options?

Happy am I, therefore, when I can ‘loan’ my new neighbor’s accessories for a blog shoot.  Since moving to Cambridge I’ve found myself in close proximity to fellow blogger Briony of A Girl A Style - we’d met prior to my move to Cambridge but quite co-incidentally we found ourselves a stone’s throw from each other.  Very handy when it comes to [motivation to attend your weekly barre fitness classes and] photoshoots out and about in Cambridge; mostly for the necessary humour when passers-by decide to comment on a) choice of outfit (yes, yes, thank you I like it too, please don’t stand and watch you are really putting me off) b) appropriateness of said choice of outfit during current climate (the fashion calendar works in advance leave me alone) or perhaps even c) just photobombing me (really? REALLY?). Actually c) only ever happened in NYC, we Brits are far too polite for that kind of thing.

But I digress. On this recent shoot I wanted to show an option for going-out in the winter evenings.  I can struggle to balance my love of fashion with my basic need for warmth (I hate being cold, Blog Reader,) so I’m constantly seeking solutions where I don’t have to make a choice in this dilemma.  I have this new three-quarter length sleeved polo neck by Pop Boutique which is a great choice for comfort, warmth and a dose of minimal chic-ness, which I’m wearing here with this midi skirt with a dramatic front split from US brand Reformation.  The Isla Heels are from Reiss (did you see the ‘My Style, After Dark’ collaboration with Reiss Fashion?) and the bag? A temporary loan from A Girl A Style.  She has all the best accessories. I stole her Chanel for this feature. It really made me want to be an accessories person, it really did*.

I’ve been having a wonderful break in The Canary Islands.  I’m flying home this weekend, and before London Fashion Week kicks off I wanted to post the second of my beach outfits from the vacation (I have mostly been living in swimsuits and bikinis, which has considerably lightened my suitcase – good news for me since I am usually the one bemoaning the extra kilograms of luggage charges at the airport).

I think it is increasingly acceptable, in fact encouraged these days, to mix ‘high’ and ‘low’ fashion.  My new rose gold Tom Ford Marko Aviators have been a great asset this trip. Since the lenses are polarized, they eliminate reflections and glare (great if you are spending a lot of time near the sea, or perhaps on a boat).  They also offer some additional protection from the harmful UV rays, not to mention they look pretty damn chic.

The shiny rose gold frames really stood out when I wore the aviators with my black cross front wrap halter bikini from ASOS.  As bikinis go this is a great sporty style though probably for smaller bust sizes only – I find the halter neck style really flattering for my shape (a swimsuit version also exists, click HERE.) A Bond Girl moment for me on my trip! To quote the memorable scene from Dr No. where Ursula Andress (Honey Ryder) emerged from the sea in her bikini:  ’Honey: Are you looking for shells?;  007: No, I’m just looking.’

The Wide Leg: ASOS Navy Trousers

Ralph-Lauren

Asos-pants-ralph-lauren-topI’ve been reading lots of different fashion articles this week that foretell the end of the skinny jean.  Death to the skinny jean! RIP skinnies!  I refuse to believe any of this of course, since for me and many others I believe, skinnies are less of an active fashion choice and more of a default option.  Skinny black jeans, black heels white shirt – check! Skinny blue jeans, trainers, denim shirt – check!  I tell myself they make economic sense too – less fabric? Check! check!

Despite my love of skinnies, I have for this style post decided to take the wide legged option.

I found this pair of wide legged pants on ASOS. Absolutely perfect for work, they are soft to touch and have a high-rise waist that matches shirts that are tucked in and fitted tops and tees alike.  I did wonder if all the extra fabric would be unflattering – but I think that wearing a heel that exposes the foot is key to pulling this voluminous style off with confidence as it elongates the leg.  I really admire those who can pull off styling where the fabric on the leg almost meets the floor (in the war of fashion vs practicality / comfort etc, be sure that fashion always wins out, though admittedly the rain might have other ideas…)

Are you wearing yours wide yet, Blog Reader?
