Fitness_Fashion_nike_espaliersportDuring my September holiday to The Canary Islands, American Husband inspired me to keep working at my fitness and created for me a series of largely bodyweight-focused ‘WODS’ (workout-of-the-day in CrossFit terms).  Since no equipment is needed you can pretty much do these anywhere, anytime – perfect for when you are traveling or can’t make the gym*.  I’ve been trying to incorporate this style of activity into my workout routine back home, and of course whenever I start any new fitness regime, you can pretty much guarantee I’ll need some new kit to wear that motivates me to work hard and feel my best.

Espalier Sport are a new brand that weaves sleek, seductive, silhouettes with subtle yet powerful feminine details into an active-lifestyle collection for withstanding the rigors of fitness as well as being something you want to incorporate into everyday wear.  Designer Karen Hseih developed Espalier Sport from an appreciation of lingerie and an interest in the empowering nature of innerwear for some women. With this active-wear collection, she seeks to embrace both ease in movement and sensual freedom of expression, which she achieves very nicely with this comfortable and a-hint-of-the-provocative line.

I’ve worn this cropped wide-band bra-top for yoga and the bodyweight WODS I mentioned at the start of this post.  Whilst some might find the straps insubstantial for lots of high impact activity (you might prefer the midriff bra top), the wide band gives good support around the chest area.  This top is lined, has removable cups and a racer-back which I much prefer for freedom of upper body movement.

You can view the whole collection of tops, bottoms and cover-ups HERE.

When you find a method of exercise that works for you, you sick faithfully to it because you see the results and have fun doing it.  Barre Fitness has become this for me, a unique method of cross-conditioning that utilizes the most effective aspects of ballet, pilates, flexibility and strength training.  In a typical class you will do a warm up, spend time at the ballet barre and do mat work – being led through a low impact, high intensity workout with lots of movements designed to challenge your core and lengthen and tone your body (no tutus required).

The benefits of the barre: Strong core and back muscles; increased flexibility and mobility; sculpted arms, abs, bottom and thighs; improved posture and balance; increased co-ordination.

I love to wear a bodysuit and leggings to Barre Fitness – though tight clothing is not a requirement, I think this style of outfit helps me focus on every muscle in my body and remember to engage my core (ballet studios are enveloped by mirrors – no body checking allowed, use them to focus your movements!)  Here I’m wearing my favourite bodysuit from Kore Wear and leggings from Zella at Nordstrom.

Are you a fan of the barre? Or does it bring out the ‘black swan’ in you? Leave me a comment below…

I’ve been having a wonderful break in The Canary Islands.  I’m flying home this weekend, and before London Fashion Week kicks off I wanted to post the second of my beach outfits from the vacation (I have mostly been living in swimsuits and bikinis, which has considerably lightened my suitcase – good news for me since I am usually the one bemoaning the extra kilograms of luggage charges at the airport).

I think it is increasingly acceptable, in fact encouraged these days, to mix ‘high’ and ‘low’ fashion.  My new rose gold Tom Ford Marko Aviators have been a great asset this trip. Since the lenses are polarized, they eliminate reflections and glare (great if you are spending a lot of time near the sea, or perhaps on a boat).  They also offer some additional protection from the harmful UV rays, not to mention they look pretty damn chic.

The shiny rose gold frames really stood out when I wore the aviators with my black cross front wrap halter bikini from ASOS.  As bikinis go this is a great sporty style though probably for smaller bust sizes only – I find the halter neck style really flattering for my shape (a swimsuit version also exists, click HERE.) A Bond Girl moment for me on my trip! To quote the memorable scene from Dr No. where Ursula Andress (Honey Ryder) emerged from the sea in her bikini:  ’Honey: Are you looking for shells?;  007: No, I’m just looking.’
