Somewhere in between trying on the Rag & Bone jeans I’ve been coveting for ages and purchasing a visor from ASOS, I realised I was leaning heavily towards modern sport style clothing.  My Wardrobe defined this trend as “sometimes techy, always functional and   unquestionably chic, it works 24/7 Monday to Sunday“.  Not long after seeing the My Wardrobe feature, which brought together a collection of brands under this theme, I read a nice blog post on Style Positively about sports luxe styling.  I asked Chelsie if she would adapt the post for StyleOnTheCouch; she said yes (thanks Chelsie!) and so here it is…

Sport Luxe won’t see you go unnoticed this spring with contrasting colors, geometric shapes, mesh fabrics and form fitting shapes.  Alexander Wang captured this trend perfectly with his spring ready to wear collection that was inspired by sports such as motorcross and BMX.  His side-striped designs on tops and pants not only gave them a bold, edgier look but they also helped create a leaner silhouette which added a very feminine chicness to the overall style:

What I like about this trend is that it’s somewhat of a challenge in that is different from what you normally see during the springtime. Everyone’s personal style can adapt to the sport trend, whether your look is edgy or sophisticated.  It allows you to keep true to your style but with a more sporty casual chic flair which is perfect for weekend wear. Plus, you won’t have to sacrifice your beloved heels for sneakers! Nicole Miller, Isabel Marant and Alexander Wang paired their sporty looks with a great pair of high heels:So, if you’re going for a (seemingly contradictory) soft and edgy look the garments from the Alexander Wang collection will suit you perfectly. For a more sophisticated style try items like this relaxed Markus Lupfer Sweater from ASOS that has the added detail of contrasting colors in the pleated hem and these ASOS fitted straight leg pants with piping down the side.Even though these items are fantastic for the present spring season they are also perfect to carry into fall.  J Crew and Kelly Wearstler both paired vibrant sweaters with flowy skirts and fitted pants in their fall 2012 ready to wear collections:Runway photos from Style.com.

I must say, as lovely as I find these looks on others, the modern sport trend is just not one that I feel I can pull off myself. I think it’s my inherent aversion to practicality in fashion that steers me away – there is something about baseball caps and comfortable lace-up shoes that simply do not make me feel fashionable. I look forward to seeing how you wear this trend, though – you’re always so elegant, I’m sure you’ll put a lovely spin on it!

Thanks Cam – Chelsie did a wonderful job selecting images for the post. I saw on Young British Designers recently too that Eudon Choi has some sports inspired spring pieces. I love his stuff.
