StyleOnTheCouch Loves: Norma Kamali 3D

When the dancing models for Lanvin appeared on the scene, I laughed a little, I really did, but the clothes were better than the grooves and Mr Elbaz stole the show at the end.  I have to give it to Norma Kamali for hiring the most fabulous models to dance in the presentation of her Spring Summer 2012 collection: 67 looks showcased in an infectiously cute eight minute fashion film utilising 3D technology to show her designs in a unique and innovative way.  You need 3D glasses to watch the film, which you can request through Norma Kamiali‘s Facebook page and website.  The paper glasses are made more attractive (I find these things a wee bit ludicrous and I await the 3D technology from Apple to arrive) by being shaped according to Kamali’s signature cat eye frames).

The film premiered at New York Fashion week and as I was unable to attend I was kindly invited to Norma Kamali‘s Fifth Avenue showroom to watch it. For those of you who don’t know the designer, you will probably be familiar with one of her designs, the iconic red bathing suit worn by Farah Fawcett in Charlie’s Angels.  To be a Kamali customer you may need a degree of self assurance and confidence to dress in her clothes; the long, fitted “obi” style gowns and mesh detail skirts and tops….  It’s understandable why the likes of Rhianna, Beyonce and Lady Gaga are often found wearing her pieces, as some are show stopping

Of course, as you know Blog Reader, any items that can double up as swimwear as well as lingerie or outerwear for that matter are a big win for me

The Spring Summer collection has both a modern and retro feel.  The fabrics may shift us to the future but the 20s, 60s and maybe a splash of the 80s are also injected into the line too.  Personally I wanted to take the polka dots home and dance around immediately

At the top of this post I’ve included a short, 40 second clip of the fashion film.  You can watch the entire film here – the 3D turns off but I highly encourage you to send off for the glasses so you can enjoy the movement of the models in the clothing in 3D.  Also visit the website to shop the collection in 3D and take part in a fashion game….

“Stay true to who you are and reinvent to be relevant” ~ Norma Kamali

For a designer who has been retailing since 1967, I think Kamali is managing just this.  What great advice for the rest of us.

I love Norma Kamali. I’m not sure how I feel about novelty collection displays like videos, but the designs truly speak for themselves here- the delicate colours and feminine details combined with obviously impeccable tailoring are always a winning combination in my book!

Wow – I was not aware of her as a designer – thank you! Norma knows what it’s like to be a woman and truly dress a woman’s body – vavavoom! All the pictures that you’ve included in your blog are absolutely gorgeous. Holy guacamole, I think I’m in love!
